For golfers, one big 2026 story to know before booking: Kapalua's water crisis closed both courses in fall 2025; the famous Plantation Course reopened in strong shape that November, but the Bay Course remains closed indefinitely, and the PGA Tour's Sentry has left Kapalua for good — which also means no January tournament closure anymore.

Kapalua Plantation Course (10–12 min) — the bucket list

The Kai is the forgiving par-70 for families and mid-handicappers, usually $170–$210. • The Dunes at Maui Lani (Kahului, ~35 min) — links golf in real sand dunes; roughly $129 morning sliding to $69 after 2 p.m. The island's best pure-golf value.
• Wailea — beautiful, and more than two hours round-trip from Honokōwai. With the Plantation twelve minutes away, drive south only if you're already spending a day there.

Tennis & pickleball, from free to first-class

• At the Mahana (free, zero minutes): the on-property lighted tennis court and pickleball court — morning calm, evening lights, and oceanfront shuffleboard when the legs give out. Bring balls from home or grab them at a west-side shop.
