Courts on property, Kapalua up the road

A bucket-list golf course twelve minutes north, two resort courses five minutes south with the best twilight deal on the island — and tennis and pickleball you can play before breakfast without leaving the Mahana.

Start with the thing no hotel on the strip can offer: the Mahana has its own lighted tennis court and pickleball court, free for guests, steps from the elevator. Trade winds build through the day here just as they do on the fairways — play at first light or under the lights in the evening calm.

For golfers, one big 2026 story to know before booking: Kapalua's water crisis closed both courses in fall 2025; the famous Plantation Course reopened in strong shape that November, but the Bay Course remains closed indefinitely, and the PGA Tour's Sentry has left Kapalua for good — which also means no January tournament closure anymore.

The courses

Kapalua Plantation Course (10–12 min) — the bucket list

The Coore/Crenshaw giant that hosted the PGA Tour's winners-only opener for a quarter century: massive elevation change, trade-wind strategy, and the famous downhill par-5 18th. 2026 rates: standard $475 (premium times $546) including cart; club rental $95 with two sleeves of balls; optional forecaddies $160–$185 requested a week ahead. The 30-day booking window is the whole game — set an alarm. It's a $500 day, and it's the round people fly here for.

Royal Kāʻanapali & Kāʻanapali Kai (5–8 min) — the neighborhood rounds

The Royal is a genuine Robert Trent Jones Sr. championship layout (the 449-yard 18th along the canal drew Arnold Palmer's praise) — dynamically priced, roughly $250–$340 mornings in season. The Kai is the forgiving par-70 for families and mid-handicappers, usually $170–$210. The deals live late in the day: verified 2026 summer Super Twilight after 3 p.m. — $89 Royal / $69 Kai (carts in by 7, eighteen holes not guaranteed), plus same-day “Hana Hou” replays at $69/$49 and junior rates that make a family nine absurdly cheap. Book direct at kaanapaligolfcourses.com — its live pricing usually beats the aggregators.

The value board

Wind strategy
Twilight rates are real savings, but the trades build after lunch — regulars grab the first twilight slot and bring a knockdown shot, then enjoy the frequent late-day lull toward sunset. Mornings are calmer and pricier; there is no free lunch, only cheaper wind.
