Kāʻanapali has two personalities. The famous one — Whalers Village, the Sheraton, the Hyatt, the Westin — is the resort strip: pools, beachfront bars, a paved boardwalk, and prices to match. The Mahana is on the other one: the north end, at Kahekili Beach, about 1.8 miles up the coast — a 40-minute walk along the beach path or a 5–10-minute drive. Far fewer people, a reef with resident turtles right offshore, and condo buildings instead of hotel towers. Honokōwai's shops and restaurants are five to ten minutes north; Nāpili and Kapalua ten to fifteen.
What makes this building specific: the two towers sit right at the sand, and unit 418 is roughly thirty feet from the water — close enough that the sound of the ocean is the house soundtrack.
Kahekili Beach (locals also say Airport Beach) sits inside the Kahekili Herbivores Fisheries Management Area, a state zone where taking herbivorous fish and urchins is prohibited to help the reef. Green sea turtles — honu — are seen regularly through the year, and between roughly December and April you can often hear humpback song underwater. Enter over sand, not reef; mornings are usually calmer and clearer; wear mineral sunscreen (Maui County bans non-mineral sunscreen without a prescription). Black Rock, the famous snorkel headland, is a separate site about 1.5 miles south.
Safety note: do not swim around the north point of Black Rock, the lava headland at the beach's south end — there is a strong, persistent current around the point and it ranks among the most dangerous swimming spots on Maui. Full details in our snorkeling guide.
Five landscaped acres at the end of a private drive. The tiled pool and jetted spa sit oceanfront with teak furniture; tennis and pickleball courts are on property; the shared barbecue grills are cleaned daily; parking is free and shaded under monkeypod trees. These are the building's facilities, shared by everyone staying at the Mahana, whichever unit or company they booked with. There is no resort fee for a stay in unit 418.
Everything on this page about the grounds applies to any Mahana unit. What is specific to unit 418, and ours to vouch for: a 938-square-foot, fourth-floor, oceanfront one-bedroom with a king bed and one full bathroom (walk-in shower, no tub), a queen sofa sleeper in the living room (maximum four guests), central air conditioning, a private washer and dryer in the unit, Wi-Fi, a lanai facing the water, and a closet of beach gear — cooler, chairs, boogie board, snorkel sets and pickleball paddles. Check-in is 4 p.m., checkout 11 a.m.; most dates have a three-night minimum; the booking guest must be 25 or older; no pets, smoking or events. Furnishings, air conditioning, floor height and policies vary from unit to unit at the Mahana and from one management company to another — what we describe here is 418. The full list is on the details & booking FAQ.
The same units often appear three ways: on the big platforms (with their service fees stacked on top), through management companies, and direct from owners. Booking direct means a much lower service fee than Airbnb or Vrbo, you correspond with the people who own the place, and the total you see before paying is the total you pay — the live calendar and rates are in the booking widget on the home page (and below), with the how-and-why on Book direct & save. Whichever unit you choose, confirm the specifics that vary unit to unit at the Mahana: air conditioning, floor height, and corner vs interior position.
