Ziplines, horses & helicopters

West Maui punches above its weight for adrenaline — but the landscape shifted after 2023, and plenty of guides haven't caught up. The quick corrections: Piʻiholo Ranch's famous zipline is permanently closed, Lahaina Stables and Kahoma Ranch ATV are gone, “Mendes Ranch” rides on as Circle M Ranch, and jet skis and parasails vanish from these waters every winter by law. Here's what's real in 2026.

Two great courses, ten minutes away

• Kapalua Ziplines (~12 min north) — Maui's only all-dual-line course: every zip is side-by-side racing format, plus a guide-driven mountain ATV shuttle and Hawaii's longest suspension bridge. Four-line tours about $190–$198; six-line (~2 miles of cable) $220–$240. Ages 10+, 4 feet tall, 60–250 lbs — the course for families whose kids miss Skyline's heavier minimum. Weekday mornings sell out a week or more ahead.
• Skyline Hawaii — Kāʻanapali 8-line (~10 min) — the course in the hills directly above the resort, with big ocean-and-Lānaʻi views. $209.95, ages 10+, 80–260 lbs strictly enforced with a scale at check-in. The fastest, highest-feeling lines on the west side.
• For little kids: Maui Zipline at the Tropical Plantation (~40 min) takes ages 5+ and 45 lbs — five gentle dual lines, $149, pairs well with the plantation tram. Jungle Zipline in Haʻikū ($139–$159, ages 6+) is the rainforest option to bolt onto a Road to Hāna morning.

Paniolo country

• Ironwood Ranch (Nāpili, 5–8 minutes — the closest riding on the island) — now a boutique operation running private and 2–4-rider groups only, about $150 for 1.5 hours on the sunset-facing West Maui mountainside. Strict 190 lb limit, the lowest on Maui; heavy rain cancels for mud. Book direct: (808) 669-4991.
• Circle M Ranch (Waiheʻe, ~50 min) — the former Mendes Ranch, and still the most scenic ride on Maui: along the Waiheʻe Valley rim with ocean on one side and green vertical walls on the other. About $180 group / $280 private, ages 7+, roughly 230 lb cap; riders are weighed at check-in.
• Thompson Ranch (Kula, 1.5+ hrs) — Maui's oldest family stable, rides at 4,000–6,500 feet on Haleakalā's slopes; combine with an Upcountry day and call (808) 878-1910 for rates.

Helicopters — and the one route worth it

All tours fly from Kahului Heliport, about an hour's drive. The honest advice repeated across visitor forums: most of Maui you can drive — the flight that justifies the money is the West Maui & Molokaʻi route (60 min, $350–$450), which crosses to Molokaʻi's 3,000-foot sea cliffs — the tallest in the world — and hovers past Honokōhau Falls, Hawaii's tallest at 1,749 feet. Neither is reachable any other way.

• Operators: Blue Hawaiian (Eco-Star fleet, landing tours from ~$419), Air Maui (Maui-only for 30+ years; runs a doors-off West Maui & Molokaʻi flight ~$350–$400), Sunshine and Maverick.
• Fly in the morning — afternoon clouds sock in the West Maui summits, and cancellations get rescheduled or refunded. Seats are assigned by weight and balance (the $150 front-seat upgrade exists for a reason); heavier solo travelers may need a comfort seat.

Jet ski & parasail at Kāʻanapali

• UFO Parasail — launches from Kāʻanapali Beach in front of Whalers Village; roughly $99–$160 depending on line length, observers ~$65.
• Maui Watersports jet ski — the island's only jet-ski operation: a quick Zodiac shuttle from the beach to a floating platform offshore; about $168–$170 for a 45-minute ride, drivers 16+.

ATVs: West Maui's longtime ATV outfit (Kahoma Ranch) closed after the fires. Off-road cravings are best served by the guide-driven ATV segment built into the Kapalua zipline tour, or Maui Off-Road Adventures' private side-by-side tours (~$495 per vehicle for up to four).
